Speaking at BlogHer 06

It’s official that I will be speaking at BlogHer this summer in San Jose about Blogging and Katrina! See Day 2 of the schedule for more information on the talk. After I sync-up with Grace and Dina (hi y’all!), I’ll start posting what I want to talk about and see where the interest lies, like I did with this post. I don’t want to limit the discussion to just my blog, but I’m interested in other Waveland-related blogs, like how the BWYC used a blog to keep in touch with everyone. There are some others that I will list here.

More to come!

The Giving Circle Easter Events in Waveland, and Ways You Can Help / Donate

Updated 4/25:  Updated entry per sender’s request

I get a lot of email regarding Waveland, mostly from people who want to help donate or do something, although ever now and then i get assistance requests from residents.  So, what i’ve started doing is asking the organizations that contact me to include a post write-up, including 1. Information for Waveland Residents and 2. How people can donate.  let’s see how this works.

Posted with permission from sender…  Note their big push is the Home Rebuilding Effort listed below.

The Giving Circle, Inc. began as a grass-roots effort to help children and families affected by the hurricanes of 2005. Waveland, Mississippi is our current focus. Donations are used to directly help the residents of Waveland rebuild their lives.

Donations: Check or Money Order payable to The Giving Circle, Inc. Box 3162 Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 Please include your name & address when making a donation so we may properly thank you!

With over 100 applications from families in need of assistance, we are in process of seeking individuals or teams of skilled construction tradesmen or laborers to help with building; and businesses or individuals who are interested in making a financial contribution.  Anyone with such resources is urged to pass the information on to mark@thegivingcircle.org. Donations should be sent to THE GIVING CIRCLE, INC. P.O. Box 3162 Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

SPORTS TEAM SPONSORSHIPS:
We are seeking sponsorships (@ $350) from individuals and companies to support the Hancock County Girls Softball League. Checks made out to Hancock County Girls Softball League should be sent to THE GIVING CIRCLE, INC. P.O.

WRITE-A-THON  to raise money for Waveland schools.  Children write a letter to students at Waveland Elementary School and collect sponsors at a nickel-a-word. All letters are delivered to Waveland Students. The project is easily adopted by schools, 4H-Clubs, scout troops, church groups, as well as by individuals.  For information & pledge forms visit:

First Waveland home rebuilt south of railroad tracks

Every so often, i run into people asking me how the reconstruction effort is going in Waveland.  For example, just the other day I was asked (by someone i don’t know – just small talk about Katrina to pass the time) if Waveland / New Orleans was rebuilt yet (sigh).

To answer both questions…

First home rebuild south of railroad tracks on Waveland Ave.

For those of you following my blog, Waveland Ave is one block from Water Street (and Pine Street) where my childhood home once was

Another MSDN Blog that discusses accessibility – Microsoft Federal Developer Evangelism Team Blog

Back in September ‘05  (yeah, I’m just a little behind the times), the Microsoft Federal Developer Evangelism Team started blogging, including a category on Accessibility.  All of their content thus far is on ASP.NET.  So, if you need info on making accessibile ASP.NET applications (not my area of expertise), definitely check them out.

V for a Very good Vendetta

Note: this post probably contains some spoilers, despite my best efforts to be vague, so read at your own risk.)

Wow, I was surprised by how good this movie was.  I had no expectations going into the movie, having neither read a review / plot line nor the comic books.  Now i can’t wait for it to come out on DVD.  It’s definitely worth watching, especially if you enjoy psychological movies similar to the Silence of the Lambs.  And for those of you like me trying to figure out where you have heard V’s voice before, just think “Mr. Anderson”, and you got it.

I really enjoyed some of the minor themes the movie explored, including coincidence, justice versus revenge, and teacher / student relationships (similar to Kill Bill and Batman Begins).  They really did a good job with the no such thing as coincidence, as I’m one of those people who will go watch the movie another 2–3 times just to catch all of the things i missed the first time.  How many times did you see a rose in the movie?

It’s also worth watching a movie where the main character wears a mask the entire time.  It’s interesting how you can still pick up on emotions through body language and voice without ever seeing a facial expression or seeing the character’s eyes.

My favorite part (besides the every other word starting with a ‘v’ speech) was the scene with the old lady in the bedroom (again, trying to be purposefully vague).  It really makes you think about the differences between justice and revenge.

Anyways, i think i caught one continuity error that hasn’t been listed yet at IMDB.  While the chancellor is talking for the first time to his top officials, the color of his bottom teeth change from a old, dirty color to a “i just used some Crest Whitestrips” back to a old, dirty color.  And it definitely wasn’t the lighting.  Drove me crazy.  Did anyone else catch that?

And lastly, as i’ll have to wait for the DVD to come out to check, does Hugo Weaving (V) appear without the mask in the final scene?  I was looking for him, but it went too fast.
