Let the good times roll again in New Orleans

Happy Mardi Gras to all you New Orleans natives who couldn’t make it back to the Quarter this year.

And yet another Fat Tuesday in Seattle. My Seattle tradition has been

  1. Wear my LSU t-shirt
  2. Wear my “good” beads to work
  3. Watch BourbonCam (I promised myself last year at this time I would get interviewed by BourbonCam, but alas, I’m still here in the rain. Next year on Rue Bourbon!)
  4. Order a king cake Listen to my Mardi Gras / Cajun music on my IPod, like how “at the Audubon zoo, they all ask’ed for you.  they even inquired about ya”
  5. Use the word “lagniappe”

Need a reminder from home? How’s about “Frankie and Johnny’s where you can have the bedroom set today! I’d like to buy a bedroom set. Do you have any credit? No, I receive welfare and social security. You need to see the special man. Letta have it. With no problem. I say I say who say I say, you can have the bedroom set today. With no problem!”

Need another? How’s about “Rosenberg Rosenberg 1825 Tulane.” (I probably should stop now and get back to work.) Does anyone remember the game show "N.O. it all?"

How do you cope being away from the carnival year after year?

My worst nightmare almost realized: Waveland appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart

After the NBC Nightly News segment featured my parents, I watched The Daily Show religiously for 2 weeks afterwards, not because I’m not already an addict, but to hope and pray my parents / family wouldn’t appear in the background.  Then, last week, it nearly happened.  I think the Daily Show just wanted to pick on Anderson Cooper, so they showed the segment of him getting emotional while watching a family return to their Waveland beach-front property.  Honestly, the first time I saw the clip, I thought it was a little over-the-top.  But after I got down there, and I met someone who was seeing their property for the first time, I totally understood where Anderson Cooper was coming from.

Thank you Brian Williams, NBC Nightly News anchor, for not getting emotional while interviewing my parents about the hurricane, in order to avoid my family appearing on The Daily Show.  Wow, that’s a sentence I never thought I could ever say.

Tonight on Larry King Live, they interviewed Jon Stewart, who didn’t miss an opportunity to poke fun at Anderson Cooper “getting emotional”, who in return had a very good comeback (even if rehearsed).  Jon Stewart immediately did a 180 and changed to tone to “have those people received their trailers yet in St. Bernard Parish?”  (LA doesn’t have counties, they have parishes.)    Anderson Cooper said no, they were still in Arkansas.  At least they are still being civil to each other.  =)

30 minute CNN special on Bay St. Louis and Katrina by Kathleen Koch

Last weekend, I caught whatever cold is going around, so Sunday afternoon I was out cold in bed.  I woke up when my mom called to tell me what’s going on in Waveland and such.  I barely remember the conversation, thanks to good ol’ Nyquil.  Anyways, I can’t go back to sleep, so I turn on TV.  CNN comes on with this segment “Save My Town:  The Fight for Bay St. Louis”  You really have to do a double-take when you just got off the phone with someone in that area to see the area on CNN.

The segment is really, really good if you are interested in
1. what does the area look like 6 months later
2. why is someone who has been paying hurricane, house, flood, etc insurance since Camille (’69) only getting 8,000 dollars back from their insurance company?  (ie what’s the difference between wind-damage versus water-damage)

In fact, CNN has a classroom activity just for these sorts of questions / discussions.  Am i in the Twilight Zone?
Did Kathleen Koch go to St. Joseph Academy / OLA or did she go to Bay High?

Attending BlogHer ’06

Thanks to KC’s post, I’ve registered for BlogHer ’06 this summer in San Jose. I’m going to propose a Room of Her Own session, as I haven’t had many opportunities to do public speaking outside of Microsoft campus.

What do you think about me speaking on “Blogging and Natural Disasters: A Case Study on Hurricane Katrina”? Yesterday, we went to Borders, where a “best of blogs” book caught my eye. The book naturally flips open right to the Blogs on Hurricane Katrina chapter, so it must be a sign this is what I should talk about. =)

Other topics do you want me to speak on? Anything in particular about Katrina and Blogs should I cover?

Our first three Power Toys for Visual Studio released

On Friday, we released our first set of Power Toys for Visual Studio!  I have to say that I have a new profound respect for UE (documentation writers) and Release PMs (those PMs who drive the release of the project), as I’ve had to play both roles last week (along with some QA work, but that’s second nature these days).

MSBee

As mentioned in my previous post, MSBee is an addition to MSBuild that allows you to build managed apps in VS 2005 that target .NET 1.1.

TFS Admin Tool

The TFS Admin Tool allows you to manage users on TFS, Sharepoint, and SQL RS through one common UI.

What’s Next

I’m working to create official homepages for these power toys, while at the same time learning how to do screencasts.  I’m also working to create a homepage for all things power toys and Visual Studio.  I heard the term “Visual Studio Solutions Center” used the other day, and the more I think about it, the more I like it.

We’re about to start our second sprint for the power toys still in beta, completing the remaining work items, fixing bugs, and so forth.  On the PM side, we’re going to begin investigations into our second set of power toy releases.
