Waveland makes National Geographic Special Edition on Katrina

At bookstores and newsstands, you’ll find a Special Edition of National Geographic on Katrina.  On page 40 and 41, there’s a center-spread of downtown Waveland.  The longest pier thingy on the right of the center is the Waveland Memorial Pier (I can’t think of the official name right now).  To the left are Coleman Ave and the armed forces memorial.  My mom’s house missed being in the photograph by ¾ of an inch.

The image covers from Market St to Nicholson Ave, I believe.  Even though I just road my bike down beach blvd a couple of weeks ago, it is still difficult to navigate around the town in these conditions.

St. Clare Elementary is located left of the center on the beach.  It looks like a really large baseball field (a not-quite circle driveway).  The road to the left of it is Vacation Ave, in case you wanted to know where this photo was taken from.

I’m sending several copies of this special edition to Waveland City Hall on Monday.

The 13 days of training for my black belt exam on Nov 11th

Here I am, 13 days away from my black belt exam.  I’m mostly concerned about having to do the 4 kicks each leg.  This is where you do front snap, side snap, roundhouse, and back kick without setting your foot down.  And of course they make you do it right at the end of the exam when you are the most tired.

I’ve been studying the videos one of my classmates going for shodan let me borrow.  Stan, I owe you big time.  One part of the exam is to reenact the kata, so not only do you have to know the kata, you have to know the kata from the attacker’s point-of-view.

Finally I’m back at 100% since Katrina.  I’m able to focus once again.  Before going home, I would try to focus during karate class, but these made-up images of what home might look like would pop into my head.  Now that I’ve been down there, I can concentrate.

Last week, I went to practice every night, except for Friday.  I was too sore to go for a 5th night in a row.  But I got a few 4-kicks practice in at the house.  =)

What does that Restore File Associations button do on the Tools-Options-Environment page?

You may have wondered what that Restore File Associations button does on the Tools-Options-Environment page.  This button allows you to restore your file extensions for VS 2005, in case any were broken after uninstalling a previous version of Visual Studio or if a 3rd-party tool reregistered an extension.  In other words, this button updates all VS-related files extensions to work with the VS 2005 version.

How it works

In the registry, under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ShellFileAssociations, you’ll find a listing of all the extensions Visual Studio 2005 cares about.  Should an uninstall of a previous version of Visual Studio, or anything else happen to unregister these file extensions, the “Restore File Associations” button will restore HKCR with the information found under ShellFileAssociations.

When to use

You’ve uninstalled VS 2003 and are noticing issues with your file associations.

You’ve installed a 3rd party tool that reregisters your file extensions and you want them to be re-associated with Visual Studio 2005.

VS 2005 Self-Repairing

When possible, Visual Studio will attempt to repair any broken file associations (those not associated with a valid application) at startup.  Let’s say I delete the file association information for .vb in HKCR (please don’t try this at home).  The next time I start VS 2005, it will restore the information in HKCR, so you get the correct file associations from here on out.

Happy Visual Studio’ing!

Pictures may speak a thousand words, but a million are needed to describe the devistation.

I have St. Clare Church registered with the giving campaign (just a fyi to the microsofties).  Once i get the Waveland Cafe registered (and hopefully Our Lady Academy not too far behind), i’ll post an official blog entry "how to donate directly to Waveland."  It’ll also contain information for non-MSFTs too.

Signing off from Waveland Cafe – Day 8

Hey all,

I’m going to officially sign off now – So many people i need to say goodbye to today.  Our flight leaves MSY (New Olreans) at 1pm on Friday, so we’re going to leave for the city around 10am.  I wish i had known that Gulfport was operating right now.  I fear MSY will be a zoo.  They say driving into New Orleans is a sad site.  We’ll find out.

When i get back to Seattle, i’ll post the pictures up.  I have about 400 photos.  I’ll probably just upload them onto FlickR with the others, unless others have a better suggestion.  If you’ve left me a message, i’ll respond when i’m back in seattle.

As the saying goes around here, "Good luck and God Bless."

Blogging from Katrina Ground Zero: Waveland, MS – Day 7

(written at 10pm CST on Wednesday 10/19/2005)

Finally, I found a place to donate the clothes.  A church in Diamondhead has offered to take the clothing.  They were no longer accepting donations, but when they heard we were from Seattle with fall / winter clothing, they made an exception for us.  It was a huge relief.  I was grinning ear to ear for the rest of the day.

I promised the church I would go around and hand out flyers.  I’m going to go to those places where clothing is rotting in the street and drop off some flyers.  The problem is no one knows where to go to get clothing.  It’s all about word of mouth.  It’s very frustrating for me to watch and hear stories along these lines.

While we were delivering the boxes, I saw my first computer science teacher.  She was looking for clothing for her daughter who was in my high school class.  I took all of my personal clothes from my closet and handed them to her.

After we got back, Casey, a reporter from Portland that contacted me via the blog, and I sync’ed up.  He filmed for about 3 hours at the house and down at my childhood home.
It was very, very hard falling asleep last night.  All the ghosts came back, after having talked about all my childhood memories.  It didn’t bother me during the daylight talking to the camera, but trying to fall asleep, it did.

We’re going to sync up when I get back to Seattle.  I’m going to email King5 with the info about the video  our story about being down here, giving the donations and such.

Sicily’s pizza opened in Bay St. Louis last week, so we decided to eat there versus the waveland cafe.  I never thought I would ever consider a pizza buffet to be fine dining, but apparently I wasn’t alone.  The carpet had been pulled up, we were served on plastic-ware, and there were only canned drinks.  But everyone there loved it.  Everyone was so nice.

Then I saw Mr. Hull walk in.  He was my Math teacher and athletic director in high school.  I told him I would mail him my TI-92 calculator, since I haven’t used in since college.  He was more than happy to take it off my hands.  So, if you have any old graphing calculators you would like to donate to the high schools down there, let me know.

It’s “funny” how many people you meet here whenever a new restaurant opens up.

Tomorrow, we’re going to being the ritual “saying goodbye” to everyone, check email, since we weren’t able to do it today, take the last photographs, and so forth.  We’re going to drive to Slidell or Gulfport for a nice goodbye dinner with my family.

I’m watching Wilma right now on one of the TV stations we can get with rabbit ears. This is crazy.  It’s the strongest storm on record, and everyone down here knows it.  There’s no way we can handle another hurricane.  I want to say it would be disastrous, but then again, it is already disastrous down here.  I’m not sure what you call a disaster that occurs after the apocalypse.  Maybe we’ll simply call it “Wilma”
